No More "Dixie" for the Chicks: Country Music Band Changes Name to Support Social Justice & Equality by Donna John

This weekend I was singing along to “Tonight the Heartache’s On Me” by the Dixie … well, hold on a minute. The screen in my car displaying the name of the song and musician on Prime Country was wrong. The Chicks? Turns out it wasn’t wrong.
The Dixie Chicks recently announced on their website that they have changed their name to The Chicks. “We want to meet this moment,” the band writes on TheChicks.com.
The word "Dixie," according to an article by CNN Digital writer Alaa Elassar, was a catchall word for the South. “There are countless songs about it. Streets still carry the name, as do restaurants and grocery stores. But Dixie has also been a problematic label, carrying with it the ugly remnants of slavery and the exploitation of Black people,” she writes in a recent article.
If the name change wasn’t a powerful enough message to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement, their new song and video from their upcoming album, Gaslighter, is. The Chick’s released “March March,” and it is getting a lot of attention. “Keep marching, even when you are an army of one. Your voice matters,” writes Jill Latchana on Twitter.
The second time I’ve cried today came when those names flashed across the screen and just kept going.

The song is a tribute to protests for social justice, equality and ending racism. Gaslighter is The Chick’s first album in 14 years.
Lady Antebellum, another popular country group, also announced a name change – they removed Antebellum and are now just Lady A. The word antebellum is associated with slavery and the American Civil War.
