In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Sesame Street has introduced Julia’s family! Julia, the first puppet with autism to appear on "Sesame Street," made her debut in 2017. The children’s program is expanding Julia's role and introducing her family to fans. We will soon meet Julia’s art teacher mom, saxophone-playing dad, protective older brother, Sam, and their dog, Rose.
Jeanette Betancourt, the senior vice president for U.S. Social Impact at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization associated with "Sesame Street," says she hopes that meeting Julia's family can help other families with autism.
Sesame Workshop also released new videos and materials to help families of children with autism on their website. According to the Sesame Workshop, the goal of these videos is to celebrate the things all families share in common, while also highlighting the specific everyday challenges (and strengths!) that kids with autism face.
This video is longer than 30 seconds, but we think it's worth it.
