Men in Early Childhood Education: My Interview With Preschool Teacher David King From Dublin, Ireland by Mike Prochaska

David King works at a preschool in Dublin, Ireland, called Creative Kids & Co. Here, he shares how he got into the Early Childhood Education field and his love of working with kids.
Q. Why did you get into this field?
“My wife is a Montessori teacher and it was via her encouragement that I got into it.”
Q. What do you see as the advantages of having male teachers?
“I see many advantages to having a good gender balance in education. It is more reflective of real society for one. It also shows young children that men can perform caring roles and it allows children to build relationships with both men and women. I think that in general men bring something different to the table and it should be embraced.”
Q. What school do you work at or age group?
“I work in an award-winning preschool called Creative Kids & Co. in Walkinstown, Dublin, Ireland. I mainly work with 3 to 5 years old, but I also have some involvement with the afterschool.”
Q. What’s your favorite memory working with kids?
“I have many many memories but my favorite ones are the small ones. Like when a boy who has been struggling with his zip finally got it, or when the extremely shy girl branches out and made friendships. Moments like these are what stand out to me the most.”
Q. Did you hear about the man who lost his job just because he was male?
“Yes, I heard about it and it is a dreadful thing to happen to anyone. Male or female.”
Q. Anything else you want to tell us about working with young children?
“Just that I would love to see more young men see it, as a viable option for a career. I think that would make a huge difference to the early childhood landscape.”

Q. What’s your favorite book to read to class?
“Oh, I have loads but 'The Ravenous Beast' has to be one of my favorites.”
Q. Do you have any inspiration for men who are thinking about coming in this field?
“Just that if you have a passion for education and you love children then don’t let others dictate what you can do.”
