Valerian Root Vs. Melatonin: How to Choose Which is Right for Your Child by Angela Borneman
When I first happened upon Melatonin, I'll admit I was excited. I have a highly imaginative, somewhat anxious boy who struggles with falling asleep & undisturbed sleep. Upon further inspection, while further studies are needed, the use of OTC (over the counter) Melatonin is concerning in that it is a synthetic hormone & can cause myriad disruptions for a growing child. Studies of Valerian Root, while few available, conversely show after a 7 week trial to reduce anxiety, improve focus, & promote better sleep without the groggy side effects associated with Melatonin. Still because it is sold OTC doesn't mean it's safe. Consult with a naturopath, a holistic M.D, & do some "googling" research. Then choose how & with what you will support yourself & those whom you treasure most.
